According to ICAO, a transponder (XPDR) is a receiver/transmitter that generates a response signal when properly queried, whereby the query and response are carried out on different frequencies. As a result, transponders are widely used in both civil and military aviation. In addition, the operation of the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) requires that both aircraft – the interrogator and the target – are equipped with functioning transponders. An aircraft equipped with TCAS receives information depending on the type of transponder the target aircraft is equipped with. In order to increase safety, these systems often have to be tested in national and international regulations.
